Extensive genomic variation within clonal bacterial groups resulted from homologous recombination
Due to divergence, genetic variation is generally believed to be high among distantly related strains, low among closely related ones and little or none within the same classified clonal groups. Several recent genome-wide studies, however, revealed that significant genetic variation resides in a considerable number of genes among strains with identical MLST (Multilocus sequence typing) types an...
متن کاملExtensive Capsule Locus Variation and Large-Scale Genomic Recombination within the Klebsiella pneumoniae Clonal Group 258
Klebsiella pneumoniae clonal group (CG) 258, comprising sequence types (STs) 258, 11, and closely related variants, is associated with dissemination of the K. pneumoniae carbapenemase (KPC). Hospital outbreaks of KPC CG258 infections have been observed globally and are very difficult to treat. As a consequence, there is renewed interest in alternative infection control measures such as vaccines...
متن کاملExtensive Genomic Variation within Clonal Complexes of Neisseria meningitidis
Meningococcal disease is a widely distributed complex disease affecting all age categories. It can cause severe meningitis and septicemia, especially in unvaccinated infants and young children. The causative agent, Neisseria meningitidis (Nm), can be phenotypically and genetically differentiated into serogroups and sequence types (STs) and has a highly dynamic population structure. To obtain a ...
متن کاملExtensive homologous recombination among widely divergent TT viruses.
Analyses of a collection of full-length TT virus genomes showed nearly half of them to be recombinant. The results were highly significant and revealed homologous recombination both within and among genotypes, often involving extremely divergent lineages. Recombination breakpoints were significantly more common in the noncoding region of the TT virus genome than in the coding region.
متن کاملInferring Ancestral Recombination Graphs from Bacterial Genomic Data
Homologous recombination is a central feature of bacterial evolution, yet it confounds traditional phylogenetic methods. While a number of methods specific to bacterial evolution have been developed, none of these permit joint inference of a bacterial recombination graph and associated parameters. In this article, we present a new method which addresses this shortcoming. Our method uses a novel...
